Lesson Plans
Self Portrait Project -
This Project was for the Advanced Ceramics/ 3D Art AP class. Students were to start by using a portrait of themselves to cut up and create a template which would be used to create a cardboard relief. This cardboard relief was used as a mock-up for the next part of the assignment, where students would then use the same templates to create a self portrait using clay slabs. We were fortunate enough to have a glass program on campus with with we were able to team up to create glass sandcastings of their final bisqued clay portraits. The final product will have their 3 versions of themselves as cardboard, clay and glass.

Clay Portraits
Soft Slab Cups -
This assignment for the beginning ceramics class allowed students to take slabs of clay and use techniques they have learned from previous projects to incorporate them to create a new form. Students used what they knew about creating texture to incorporate to their slab that would create the walls of their cup. Students cut out darts in the bottom of the slab cup to fold in to make it a more refined functional piece. This lesson plan was written with distance learning specifications but can be modified for in person instruction.
Below is the recorded video demonstration that my master teacher and I would record prior to giving the lesson. I would then edit all of the footage in Premiere and we would put out on average 1 new lesson a week. Check it out the youtube channel Panther Ceramics!

Student Work:
Cultural Heritage Stamps
This assignment for the beginning Ceramics classes required students to create two 4" x 4" slabs in which they would use to create a stamp. One of the stamps was used to create their initials on and the second stamp they were required to come up with a design or logo that relates to their cultural heritage. This was a great project for students to be able to share a little bit about themselves and see the cultural diversity of their peers. This would have been a lot more effective had they been able to be in the classroom with each other, but it was successful none the less. The stamps were then used to create glass castings of their image.
Rattles
This assignment for the beginning ceramics class required students to create and design a rattle of their choice. The main objective was for the students to learn how to create pinch pots in which they could score and slip together with balls of clay inside to create a hollow form that rattled. The exterior design was up to their choosing and they came up with some really cool rattles.
Underglaze Tiles
Teaching Ceramics during a pandemic was a challenge that we were able to overcome by being creative and resourceful. One way we did this was by using some premade ceramic tiles that were not glazed that we could hand out to the students to apply underglazes to. The students were required to underglaze two tiles, one with their name and one that said a positive word. The positive word could be in English or any other language. This assignment was awesome to see the cultural diversity of the class and seeing what languages some of the students spoke. The tiles were then glazed with a clear coat and will be used to tile a table that is outside of the ceramics room at Peninsula High School.
